The Cherokee was originally just a two door version of the Wagoneer, but it came into its own in 1984 when it moved to a new unibody chassis. This new SUV came to define the segment, offering the space of a station wagon in a compact, rugged package. It was so successful that its planned successor was rebranded as the Grand Cherokee upon release, keeping the original Cherokee in production for 17 years. Although the name was used on exported versions of the Liberty, the Cherokee wasn't seen here until 2013 when it was used on a new crossover. It proved so successful that the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 were canceled to open up more production capacity for the Jeep.
